Atheist Alliance International: Top Religious Influence Stories of 2013

Imagem
AAI (Atheist Alliance International) Top Religious Influence Stories of 2013 E-mail received on Dec 31st, 2014 Religion continued to wield undue influence in world culture and politics, with a number of seismic shifts felt throughout 2013. Here are the top stories of 2013 as noted by Atheist Alliance International: Pope Benedict XVI Resigns On February 11, Pope Benedict announced to a shocked world that he was resigning as Pope as of February 28 - the first Pope to do so in over 600 years. Although he claimed that his decision was based on his declining health, he also stepped down from a papacy mired in sexual and financial scandals, from the rampant child molestations being uncovered in countries around the world (and the efforts by the church to keep them secret) to the trial of Pope Benedict's whistle-blowing butler to the scandals of the Vatican bank leading to the bank chief's ouster. More than one Vatican-watcher openly wondered whether these scandals weighed a...

Homophobic Deputy is mocked on a flight by straight young men because of his homophobia

Imagem
The boys sang a song by Brazilian band Mamonas Assasinas, deceased due to an airplane crash. Feliciano, who is an evangelical pastor, attributed their death to God's judgement.   One of the band's best-selling songs was "Robocop Gay", in which Robocop came out. The boys who mocked Deputy Marco Feliciano, Congressman who wanted to approve the "Gay Cure" project and who is, as crazy as it may seem, in charge of the Human Rights Committee in the Congress, were all straight guys!!! However, Feliciano imputed the mockery to gay activists. That suits him as he loves to play the victim of the gay movement. Inversion. The guys is a complete homophobic who does not live one day without thinking of how to damage gay people's rights and lives. Feliciano tweeted messages saying that the mockery was all done by gay activists and said "May God protect us from these people." That was enough to raise his flock's anger against gay people. See tweets and...

BRAZIL: Pastor Silas Malafaia sues Human Rights activist Toni Reis

Imagem
In Portuguese here. Pastor Silas Malafaia Below, you'll find a note released by Dignity Group (Grupo Dignidade), which I've just translated into English, keeping it as faithful as I possibly could to the original. However, I've been told that it is hard to understand the case. So, I decided to offer my readers a summary by myself. Those interested in the note itself will find it below. SUMMARIZING THE CASE Translated and summarized by Sergio Viula Silas Malafaia is a pastor of the Assemblies of God in Brazil. His central office is in Rio de Janeiro. An openly opponent of the LGBT rights, Malafaia has been attacking the LGBT movement for quite a long time now. Not only has he preached against it, but also promoted actions against it through politicians faithful to him. The Brazilian Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transvestite and Transexual Association (ABGLT) has prosecuted him for promoting hatred speech against LGBT people, especially after the 15th LGBT Parade of São Paulo...

'Thanks God' there are no gays in Africa, stated pilgrims from WYW From Brazilian Site: Terra July 23. 2013 • updated at 13:50 Translated from Portuguese to English by Sergio Viula to let some friends hear of it   Pilgrims from São Tomé e Príncipe say that  their country has no homosexuals, "thanks God"  Photo: Maurício Tonetto / Terra If the Catholic Church's stands suffer resistence from anti-homophobia groups in Brazil and several parts of the world, the same does not seem to take place in São Tomé e Príncipe, in Africa. The Church's condemnation on the homosexual practice is is aligned with the local population, according to reports by the pilgrims this Tuesday in the centenial Parish of Our Lady of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. That's Eva de Carvalhos's case, 48, she gives "thanks to God" when saying that "there isn't such a thing (homosexuals)" in her country. She is from the African country, which has a predomin...

Gay Kissing Rally - The Pope in Brazil - World Youth Walk 2013

Imagem
A protest and kissing rally led by transfeminsts and LGBT people took place on July 22nd, 2013 on the famous square named Largo do Machado, in Rio. The protest was followed by a walk as far as the Guanabara Palace, where Pope Francis gave his first official speech in Brazil. Organized by a group of LGBT citizens over Facebook, the protest was not labeled with any LGBT advocacy groups' names. According to one of the organizers, the protest had been planned since the previous Pope Benedictus XVI gave a speech in the end of 2012, saying that same-sex partners' families were a threat to the world and that we are the evil in the world. "There is no interest in meeting up with the Pope, we have nothing to demand from the church. We do not want or need any religion to legitimate our sexualities. We just want them to be respected. (...) People usually don't link religious statements with the killing of Transvestites and Transexuals, or with the aggressions suffered by lesb...

TWO Condemns Boy Scouts Decision As Cowardly, Incoherent, And Mean-Spirited - A injusta decisão dos Escoteiros nos EUA - Truth Wins Out

Imagem
English: Contact: Wayne Besen Phone: 917-691-5118   TWO Condemns Boy Scouts Decision As Cowardly, Incoherent, And Mean-Spirited An estimated 1,400 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) National Council just voted 61-38 percent to end the ban on gay youth participating in the program, but kept its outrageous and offensive policy banning gay leaders and volunteers. The following is Truth Wins Out Executive Director Wayne Besen's statement: Today's Boy Scout's decision was insulting and pandered to ignorance and bigotry at the expense of gay people and their families. Allowing gay scouts but not adult scout leaders was a compromise - only in the sense that BSA compromised its integrity and decency. Let's be clear - this was not a step forward, but a step backward, because it reinforced the most vile stereotypes and misconceptions deliberately peddled by anti-gay activists. Today's decision was degrading, dehumanizing, and disgraceful. It sti...

President Dilma Rousseff: resilient in silence and omission about LGBT rights

Imagem
President Dilma Rousseff: resilient in silence and omission about LGBT rights Dilma has offered no support to LGBT people in practice. One of the most faithful affiliations to the Workers' Party is definitely Ms Dilma Rousseff, elected president of Brazil two years ago. Believe it or not, PT - Workers' Party to which Dilma is affiliated - used to be demonized by Catholics and Evangelicals before President Lula's election (her predecessor). One of the principal reasons is that PT used to be seen as a radical left-wing party, with comunist ideas. Actually, PT is known to have borne flags such as those of women's rights, LGBT rights, the agrarian reform, workers' rights, Indians' rights and other causes that nagged most of the denominations as well as the Catholic church itself.  What nobody could have ever imagined is that after 8 years (two mandates) with President Lula followed by two more years with President Dilma (there are still tw...

He is a journalist, with a master’s degree in linguistics from the Federal University of Bahia. He is also a writer and, more recently, a politician, elected in 2010 as a federal deputy by PSOL (party) from Rio de Janeiro His mandate started in February, 2011.  Interestingly, Jean Wyllys took part in the 2005 edition of Bib Brother Brazil and won the reality show competition. That’s when the whole country came to know the great person he is. Ironically, Jean Wyllys was elected to the Brazilian parliament with the lowest amount of votes from Rio de Janeiro, which meant getting 13,016 votes (0,2%), being dragged upwards by the performance of a mate from the same party,...
