The original book (Em Busca de Mim Mesmo) in Portuguese was warmly welcomed by both LGBT and straight people in Brazil. That's why I decided to translate the book and get it published on Amazon. The book was devised to be a tool for enlightenment in terms of 'ex-gay' therapies and other sources of prejudice, each of them resulting in damage to so many.

'IN SEARCH OF MYSELF' is touching, funny at times, disturbing once in a while, but encouraging and inspiring all the way through. There are lots of cases and tips related to the Brazilian context which may give readers of other countries a good glimpse of what's going on in the land of the biggest Pride Parade of the world - the LGBT Pride Parade of São Paulo. Also, in Rio the LGBT Pride Parade is the third biggest city celebration, only losing to New Year's Eve and Rio's insuperable and worldwide famous Carnival.

However, things are not that pinkish in the lives of many Brazilian LGBT people, especially those overwhelmed with fundamentalist beliefs and fears. The author knows his stuff very well as he was also a Baptist pastor and one of the founders of an 'ex-gay' ministry in Brazil.

After working 18 years with the church, I went from an enemy of the LGBT movement to an LGBT activist himself. My coming out took place in 2003 and since then I've been working hard to help foster LGBT awareness and advance LGBT rights in Brazil.

The book is a must-read. It is honest and transparent from beginning to end.

A fala em Oklahoma se dá numa hora em que o maior grupo ex-gay, a Exodus Internacional, fecha suas portas. Uma nova organização "ex-gay" está para ser lançada em Oklahoma hoje para substituir a Exodus.

Burlington, Vt. - O Diretor Executivo de Truth Wins Out Wayne Besen fará um pronunciamento importante nesta noite na cidade de Oklahoma, sob o título, "A Ascensão e Queda do Mito do Ex-Gay" ("The Rise and Fall of the Ex-Gay Myth"). Sua fala se dá um dia depois de Alan Chambers, o presidente da Exodus Internacional, ter dito que fecharia as portas de seu grupo, porque programas do tipo "orar para ficar livre da homossexualidade" não funcionam. A Exodus foi fundada em 1976 em Anaheim, California, com o objetivo de ajudar pessoas LGBT a se tornarem heterossexuais através da oração e de terapia.

"O fechamento da Exodus é um terremoto que está sacudindo as fundações da indústria 'ex-gay,' disse o Diretor Executivo do Truth Wins Out Wayne Besen. Background: Por décadas, a Exodus International foi a maior assim chamada organização "ex-gay" do mundo. Ano passado, seu Diretor Executivo, Alan Chambers, admitiu que 99.9% dos seus clientes não experiementaram mudança em sua orientação sexual. E, na noite passada ele disse que estava fechando a Exodus. Em resposta, um grupo de fundamentalistas extremistas formou a Rede Esperança Restaurada (Restored Hope Network - RNH).

A RHN, amplamente comprometida como um grupo dissidente e desertor da Exodus lançará seu encontro anual amanhã de manhã na cidade de Okahoma. 

A líder da RHN é Anne Paulk, que está no meio de um divórcio de seu marido "ex-gay" e menino propaganda do movimento, John Paulk que reconheceu esse ano: "Hoje, eu não me considero 'ex-gay' e não apoio ou promovo o movimento."

O co-fundador do grupo, Andrew Comiskey, escreveu: "Satanás se deleita na perversão homossexual." Ele também alega que a fonte de relacionamentos gays é "demoníaca."

Truth Wins Out (TWO) é uma organização não-lucrativa que luta contra o extremismo anti-LGBT. TWO se especializa em transformar informação em ação organizando, advogando e lutando pela igualdade LGBT.

BRAZIL: Homophobic Deputy Marco Feliciano Advances Law Bill to Heal Gays

Widely known as being homophobic, chauvinist, racist and xenophobic, due to several public statements violating any sense of humanism and human rights, Marco Feliciano, pastor of the Assemblies of God and congressman (deputy), was elected president of the Human Rights Committee of the Federal Congress on March 7th, 2013, due to a maneuver by his fundamentalist fellows and the lack of responsibility and ethics shown by the party of the President as well as other historically committed ones.

Since he assumed the presidency of the Human Rights Committee of the Federal Congress, Feliciano has worked to the best of his [wicked] abilities to approve a despicable law bill (PDC 234/11) issued by another fundamentalist pastor, Deputy João Campos, which is intended to remove a ban by the Federal Council of Psychology (CFP in Portuguese) on psychologists’ offering "gay healing" to homosexual patients as homosexuality is not a disease – position shared by several other worldwide known mental health organizations. It goes without saying that all attempts to change people's sexual orientation have proved to be nothing but useless and harmful throughout Western history.

Two days ago (June 18th, 2013), Feliciano managed to pass a vote on the law bill, getting it approved in the Human Rights Committee. Few votes were needed, though. So, as the committee has been taken over by his party fellows and other fundamentalist evangelical allies, his malice found no obstacles, except one vote in contrary. The bill still has to undergo evaluation and approval by two other committees before going for a final vote in a Congress plenary session to be scheduled.

After hearing that Ms Maria do Rosário, the Secretary of Human Rights, directly connected to President Dilma Roussef, announced that she would work to prevent the bill from being approved by the Congress, Feliciano promptly and openly threatened the president with an evangelical rebellion against her in case she does anything to interfere with the process.

At a moment when Brazil has been witnessing huge popular manifestations everywhere, Feliciano who has been himself the target of several protests since March this year, is adding up to the population’s dissatisfaction, therefore deepening the crisis.

Unfortunately, we cannot be so sure of the President’s good sense and commitment to the human rights as Ms Dilma Roussef has compromised several times in order to please the evangelical wing.

One thing is for sure, though: She will lose votes either way – from fundamentalist evangelicals if she stands for LGBT rights against Feliciano’s attempt to officially declare homosexuals as sick people, or from LGBT and humanists if she sacrifices laicism once again in order to please those freaking fundamentalists.

MOVIMENTO EX-GAY DIVIDIDO AINDA INCENTIVA A TERAPIA DE “CONVERSÃO” NA AMÉRICA LATINA

Boston, MA, 2 de abril de 2013: A Exodus International, rede norte-americana de ministérios cristãos proeminente no movimento “ex-gay”, mudou drasticamente sua posição em janeiro de 2012, quando o diretor executivo Alan Chambers anunciou que não acreditava mais em uma “cura” para a homossexualidade. Supostamente, isso encerrou o esforço de 35 anos da organização de “converter pessoas LGBTQ à heterossexualidade por meio da ‘submissão a Jesus Cristo’.”

No entanto, um novo relatório do think tank de justiça social Political Research Associates, intitulado “O Movimento Ex-Gay na América Latina: Terapia e Ministério na Rede Exodus”, revela que a rede global permanece dividida em sua posição sobre as nocivas terapias de “conversão” para indivíduos LGBTQ, particularmente na América Latina.

Os autores Jandira Queiroz, Fernando D’Elio e David Maas detalham que os afiliados da Exodus na América Latina publicamente se distanciam da promoção ativa de terapias “reparativas” e outras formas de terapia de “conversão”, ao mesmo tempo que apoiam ministérios ex-gays que abraçam a premissa pseudocientífica de que a homossexualidade decorre de disfunções familiares. “A alegação manifestamente enganosa da Exodus América Latina, ao rejeitar a terapia reparativa, pode estar relacionada,” escrevem os autores, “à crescente necessidade do movimento psicológico ex-gay na América Latina de operar de forma discreta.”

Entre as conclusões do relatório:

• Os dois afiliados latino-americanos da Exodus Global Alliance possuem visões contraditórias sobre como “tratar” a atração pelo mesmo sexo. O líder da Exodus Brasil, por exemplo, considera a salvação por meio de Jesus como a única forma de reprimir a homossexualidade, enquanto a Exodus América Latina ainda apoia fortemente a psicologia ex-gay desacreditada.

• Living Waters/Aguas Vivas, um ministério ex-gay que ainda defende uma cura, está ativamente envolvido com a Exodus América Latina. Ministérios como o Living Waters/Aguas Vivas continuam propagando práticas anti-LGBTQ prejudiciais, inspiradas em pseudopsicologia, mesmo enquanto reguladores tomam medidas contra aconselhamento psicológico homofóbico.

• Alguns governos latino-americanos não simpatizam com o movimento ex-gay e têm direcionado ações contra psicólogos e ministérios ex-gays com base em leis antidiscriminação. No entanto, nem todos compartilham essa perspectiva. Conservadores religiosos na legislatura brasileira estão pressionando para reverter uma regulamentação da associação de psicologia que restringe a terapia de conversão, argumentando contra restrições indevidas à sua “liberdade religiosa”.

• Ainda em 2010, líderes da Exodus participaram do maior encontro internacional da história de evangélicos. No prefácio, o Rev. Dr. Kapya Kaoma escreve que o “Terceiro Congresso Lausanne sobre Evangelização Mundial”, o maior encontro de evangélicos na história mundial, que sancionou práticas e materiais da Exodus International e da Exodus Brasil, ainda apresenta conteúdo da Exodus Global Alliance relacionado à terapia ex-gay em seu site.
