True Colors Foundation fighting for homeless LGBT youth

I'm sharing an e-mail that I have just received from Cindy Lauper's True Colors Foundation staff, signed by herself. I'd like you to consider helping that precious institution.

Dear Sergio,

Can you believe that there are people actively working to leave youth out in the cold? Don’t they realize it's just going to push us to work even harder to protect our kids?!

We need your support now to push back on groups that are looking to discriminate against homeless youth. Please make a donation today.

The Family Research Council is one of those groups. Their target: a clause in the the Runaway and Homeless Youth and Trafficking Prevention Act that would specifically protect the 40% of homeless youth who identify as identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. This is what they had to say about the clause: “It contains a definition of gender identity (‘actual or perceived gender-related characteristics’) and sexual orientation that would require special protections for some individuals at the expense of the safety and privacy of all youth served by providers.”

I don’t understand how ensuring welcoming, affirming, and appropriate services for all youth jeopardizes anyone’s safety or privacy. Programs and services receiving federal funding must be inclusive of 100% our youth, not just 60%. This isn’t about protecting some youth, but ALL youth.

We’re doing everything we can at the True Colors Fund to make this happen - but we can’t do it without you. Your support is so very important, and that’s why I’m calling on you to make an urgent gift right now.

Cindy Lauper vai abrir centro para LGBT sem-teto em Nova York

Cyndi Lauper, defensora dos direitos LGBT de longa data, 

está abrindo um novo abrigo para a população LGBT de Nova York.

A decisão foi motivada pela descoberta de Lauper sobre o fato de que aproximadamente 40% da juventude desabrigada de Nova York é LGBT.

O abrigo será chamado "True Colors," conforme anunciado por Lauper num release para a imprensa. Este é também o nome de seu famosos single de 1986. A construção das instalações estava prevista para quinta-feira, dia 1 de setembro, na West 154th Street e Frederick Douglass Boulevard em Manhattan.

"Na cidade de Nova York, um número desproporcional (cerca de 40 por cento) dos jovens sem-teto se identificam como LGBT. Ainda mais perturbadores são as histórias de discriminação e ataques físicos que essas pessoas frequentemente enfrentam em alguns dos lugares onde vão buscar ajuda. Nosso principal alvo é prover um ambiente fisica e emocionalmente seguro e encorajador que capacitará nossos jovens residentes a se tornarem as pessoas com amor próprio, felizes e bem-sucedidas que deveriam ser."

Os residentes do True Colors terão apartamentos no estilo studio, assim como espaços comunais internos e externos. Cada residente pagará um aluguel acessível (adaptado a sua renda numa escala móvel) e receberá assistência para se colocar no mercado de trabalho se estiverem desempregados. Programas sociais e educacionais também serão proporcionados aos jovens.
